Better visibility during special transport with a wireless camera system

For special and heavy-haul transport, good visibility behind the trailer is essential. The length of the combination, non-standard vehicle dimensions, and limited maneuvering space make backing up, coupling, and positioning particularly challenging. Especially when tractors and trailers are frequently swapped, a traditional camera system does not always prove reliable in practice.

With the Camos CM-5050, the driver has a camera view behind the trailer without the need for a vulnerable connection cable between the tractor and the trailer. Thanks to automatic pairing, the camera automatically connects to the monitor in the cab with every new combination.

Why is good visibility so important for special transport?

Drivers of tractor-trailer combinations must frequently maneuver in locations with limited space. Think of construction sites, industrial parks, loading and unloading areas, work sites, and warehouses. People, vehicles, materials, and other obstacles may be located behind or next to the combination.

Mirrors do not always provide a full view of the area directly behind the trailer. Furthermore, the distance between the driver and the rear of the combination makes it difficult to accurately judge distances.

A backup camera helps the driver with, among other things:

reversing and positioning;
approaching a loading or unloading area;
maneuvering in tight spaces;
checking the space behind the trailer;
preventing damage to vehicles, equipment, and infrastructure;

The camera system is a supplementary safety feature. The driver remains responsible for the maneuver but has more information available to make a safe decision.

The problem with traditional camera systems

In a traditional camera system, the camera mounted on the rear of the trailer is connected via a cable to the monitor in the cab. This solution works well as long as the tractor and trailer form a fixed combination.

However, in transport environments where tractors and trailers are regularly swapped, the connecting cable poses practical problems. The cable must be disconnected and reconnected with every swap.

This can lead to the following situations:

the driver forgets to connect the cable;
the cable gets caught on the tractor or trailer;
the connection gets damaged;
the cable is pulled loose when the tractor drives away;
a driver hooks up a trailer that doesn’t have a suitable cable;
the camera system fails due to wear and tear or a faulty connection.

As a result, although a backup camera is present, the driver does not receive an image on the monitor. Precisely when extra visibility is needed, the system cannot be used.

Wireless Camera Feed with the Camos CM-5050

The Camos CM-5050 transmits the camera image wirelessly from the trailer to the monitor in the cab.

The system consists of:

a camera mounted at the rear of the trailer;
a transmitter unit on the trailer;
a receiver unit in the tractor;
a monitor in the cab.

The transmitter sends the camera image wirelessly to the receiver. This eliminates the need for a separate video cable between the tractor and the trailer.

As soon as the electrical connection between the tractor and the trailer is established, the camera system automatically connects. The driver does not need to select a camera, enter a code, or perform any other additional steps.

How automatic pairing works in practice

Automatic pairing prevents the driver from having to manually pair a camera with the monitor every time the trailer is changed.

Step 1: Reversing Safely

The driver reverses the truck-trailer combination toward a dock, loading area, or work zone. Using the camera mounted on the rear of the trailer, the driver can see the area directly behind the combination.

Step 2: Unhitch the trailer

When the trailer is uncoupled, the connection between the camera and the monitor is automatically断开. There is no need to disconnect a separate camera cable.

Step 3: Coupling another trailer

The tractor is coupled to another trailer that is also equipped with a transmitter and a backup camera.

Step 4: Establishing an automatic connection

As soon as the power connection between the tractor and the trailer is active, the receiver detects the transmitter from the new trailer. The monitor automatically connects to the correct camera.

The driver can then immediately view the rear view without first having to configure the camera system.

Types of Work Lights: Which Light Pattern Is Right for Your Job?

A good work light not only produces plenty of light but also illuminates precisely the area where the driver or operator needs to see. Maneuvering around a truck requires a different light pattern than working on a large construction site. Operating time, vibrations, weather conditions, and the presence of bystanders also determine which work light is best suited.

How do you choose between high beam, wide flood, diffused, and reverse lighting? And when is a standard work light sufficient, or when does premium heavy-duty lighting make more sense? In this blog, we’ll outline the most important options.

Why the Right Work Light Is Important

Trucks and machinery are regularly used in low-light environments. Think of loading and unloading in the early morning, waste collection on dark streets, earthmoving in the evening, or maneuvering on an unlit company premises.

Insufficient or improperly distributed light can lead to:

poor visibility of people and obstacles;
dark areas around the vehicle;
misjudgment of distances;
distracting shadows and reflections;
eye strain;
glare affecting employees and other road users;
an increased risk of collisions and property damage.

A lamp with high light output is not automatically the best solution. The shape and distribution of the light beam are just as important.

What types of light beams are there?

High beam: focused visibility over a greater distance

A high-beam work light concentrates the light and projects it over a greater distance. This type of light is used when the driver or operator needs to see further ahead.

High beam is suitable for:

large and unlit industrial sites;
ports and transshipment areas;

A high-beam lamp is less suitable as the sole source of lighting immediately around the vehicle. Due to the narrow, focused beam, dark areas can form on the sides. High beams are therefore often combined with wider work lights.

Wide flood: wide visibility around the vehicle

A wide flood work light spreads light over a wide area close to and around the vehicle. This provides a clear overview during work where people, objects, or materials are located at close range.

Wide flood is suitable for:

loading and unloading;
coupling a trailer;
working next to a truck;
maneuvering on a construction site;
working with an excavator or wheel loader;
waste collection;
operating agricultural machinery;
maintenance and service work.

The wide light distribution helps minimize dark areas next to the vehicle. This makes wide flood a commonly used solution for general work lighting.

Flood: Balance Between Width and Range

A flood work light offers a combination of width and range. The light pattern is narrower than that of a wide flood, but illuminates a larger area than a narrow high-beam beam.

Flood is suitable for:

general work around vehicles;
earthmoving;
work with cranes and telehandlers;
industrial applications;
machines that require lighting both close by and slightly further ahead.

Flood lighting can be a practical solution when a single lamp needs to illuminate multiple areas of the work zone.

Diffused: Even light at close range

A diffused work light spreads the light evenly and reduces harsh transitions between light and dark areas. This creates a soft lighting effect with fewer sharp contrasts and reflections.

Diffused lighting is suitable for:

inspection and maintenance work;
service vehicles;
work directly next to or behind the vehicle;
lighting in engine rooms;
tasks where precision is important;
situations involving reflective materials.

Because the light is evenly distributed, the eyes do not have to switch as often between very bright and dark areas. This promotes comfortable and focused work.

Super Wide: Maximum Width Up Close

Super wide work lights illuminate a very large area immediately around the vehicle or machine. This light pattern is ideal when a clear view across the entire width is more important than long-distance visibility.

Examples include:

large construction machinery;
street sweepers and garbage trucks;
wheel loaders;
agricultural machinery with wide implements;
vehicles where employees are working on both sides.

The mounting position and alignment are important here. A very wide lamp that is positioned incorrectly can cause reflections or glare.

Pencil beam or spot: narrow and highly focused light

A pencil beam or spot lamp directs the light in a narrow beam over a greater distance. This type is intended for very specific applications and not as general work lighting.

Possible applications include:

remote inspection;
illumination along a boom or crane arm;
terrain reconnaissance;
forestry and mining;
targeted visibility from large machines.

To provide a full view around a vehicle, a pencil beam is usually combined with flood or wide flood lights.

Reversing lights: visibility during maneuvering

Reversing lights are specifically designed to illuminate the area behind the vehicle. These lights assist the driver when reversing, parking, coupling, and approaching a loading dock.

When a work light is used as an official reverse light on public roads, appropriate ECE R23 approval is essential. Not every standalone work light can automatically be used as a reverse light.

A good backup light:

illuminates the area directly behind the vehicle;
helps identify people and obstacles sooner;
supplements the image from the backup camera;
prevents overexposure of the camera image;
minimizes glare for bystanders and other road users.

An anti-glare light can be particularly valuable for garbage trucks, street sweepers, delivery vehicles, and other vehicles that regularly back up in public spaces.

LED, halogen, or xenon?

In addition to the light pattern, the lighting technology used also plays a role.

Halogen

Halogen bulbs generally have a low purchase price and are easy to replace. However, they consume more power, generate more heat, and have a shorter lifespan. Halogen may still suffice for occasional use, but for professional and long-term use, LED usually offers more advantages.

Xenon

Xenon produces powerful light and was long used when high light output was required. However, the technology requires additional electronics and takes time to reach full brightness. For many work applications, xenon has now been replaced by LED.

LED

LED work lights provide full light output immediately, consume relatively little energy, and have a long service life. In addition, the optics can be precisely tailored to different lighting patterns.

As a result, LEDs are now the most common choice for professional work lighting on trucks, construction machinery, agricultural vehicles, and material handling equipment.

Don’t just look at the number of lumens

Lumens indicate how much light a lamp produces, but they don’t tell you where that light ends up. A lamp with fewer lumens and a well-designed light pattern can be more practical in real-world use than a very powerful lamp with a lot of stray light.

When comparing products, pay attention to the operational lumen rating. This provides a more realistic picture of the light output during normal use than the theoretical sum of the LED chips.

Other important characteristics include:

light distribution and beam shape;
color temperature;
color rendering index (CRI);
IP rating for water and dust resistance;
vibration and shock resistance;
heat dissipation;
EMC rating;
supply voltage and power consumption;
connection and mounting method;
any R23 approval.

A good EMC rating helps prevent the lighting from interfering with onboard computers, cameras, sensors, and other vehicle systems.

When should you choose premium work lights?

Yet it is precisely those lights that determine how safely, accurately, and comfortably the operator can work in the evening and at night.

Premium heavy-duty work lights are especially advisable when:

the machine is used daily or for extended periods in the dark;
severe vibrations and shocks are present;
the lights are exposed to dust, water, mud, or high-pressure cleaning;

Truck Toll Introduced: From Mandatory Toll Boxes to Better Control Over Your Transportation Costs

The truck toll has been in effect in the Netherlands since July 1, 2026. Owners of Dutch and foreign trucks in vehicle categories N2 and N3 will now pay per kilometer driven. This requires not only a properly functioning toll box but also insight into what the toll actually means for your trips, rates, and profitability.

What does the truck toll entail?

The truck toll applies to trucks with a maximum gross vehicle weight exceeding 3,500 kilograms. The toll is charged on virtually all Dutch highways and a number of provincial and municipal roads.

The amount per kilometer depends, among other things, on:

the maximum technically permissible mass of the vehicle or combination;
the CO₂ emission class;
the Euro emission class;
the number of kilometers driven on toll roads.

The average rate in 2026 will be €0.191 per kilometer, but the actual amount can vary significantly depending on the vehicle and shipment. The Eurovignette was phased out with the introduction of the truck toll in the Netherlands.

A toll box is required

To pay the truck toll, a contract must be entered into with an authorized service provider for each vehicle subject to the toll. In addition, the vehicle must be equipped with a properly functioning toll box, also known as an On-Board Unit (OBU).

The toll device automatically records where the vehicle is traveling and ensures that the toll due is processed through the selected service provider. Without a functioning toll device, the vehicle is not permitted on the road. This also applies when you are driving only on roads where no truck toll is charged.

From a per-kilometer rate to actual transportation costs

An average rate per kilometer provides only a rough estimate. The actual impact on your transportation costs is determined by your vehicles, routes, load, scheduling, and the number of kilometers driven.

Many transport operators initially calculated the truck toll based on an average rate per kilometer. In practice, the monthly amount may turn out differently. This raises important questions:

Which trips still yield a sufficient return?
Have the costs been fully and correctly passed on to customers?
Which routes or transport combinations can be planned more efficiently?
Where do discrepancies arise between preliminary and final calculations?
What does the toll amount mean per customer, vehicle, route, or order?

A summary invoice alone doesn’t always provide sufficient answers to these questions. To do so, toll registration must be combined with reliable trip and vehicle data.

Looking Back: Live Demo of Collision Detection and Automatic Braking

During the Kipper Event on June 5 and 6, 2026, Rietveld, together with Vrijbloed Transport, demonstrated how collision detection and automatic braking work in practice. Visitors at Veluwe aan Zee were able to experience firsthand how EasyBrake supports the driver and can intervene when a collision is imminent.

From Warning to Active Intervention

Collisions with vehicles and machinery pose a major risk, especially when reversing and maneuvering. Cameras and detection systems can alert the driver, but EasyBrake adds an extra layer of safety: automatic braking intervention.

During the demonstration, visitors saw how the system:

detects people and obstacles around the vehicle;
warns the driver in a timely manner;
automatically applies the brakes when there is an imminent risk of collision;
allows the driver to retain control of the vehicle.

This clearly demonstrated how technology can help when a driver fails to react in time due to blind spots, heavy traffic, or other circumstances. No theoretical explanation—just vehicle safety in action.

EasyBrake Demonstrated on a Vrijbloed Truck

For the live demonstration, EasyBrake was installed on a Vrijbloed Transport vehicle. The system monitored a preset danger zone around the vehicle. As soon as a person or obstacle was detected in this zone, a warning was issued, and the system could automatically intervene if necessary.

Visitors could sit next to the driver and experience firsthand from inside the cab how detection, warning, and braking intervention work together. This clearly demonstrated how EasyBrake supports the driver during critical maneuvers.

The original event took place on Friday, June 5, and Saturday, June 6, 2026, at Veluwe aan Zee, Nulde Beach.

Is a backup alarm required?

Almost everyone recognizes the familiar beeping sound of a truck, forklift, or construction vehicle backing up. It warns people in the vicinity that a vehicle is backing up and that they may be in the danger zone.

Since so many vehicles are equipped with a backup alarm, it seems logical that such an alarm would always be required by law. However, the situation is more nuanced. There is no general vehicle regulation in the Netherlands that stipulates that every vehicle must have a reverse alarm as standard equipment. However, based on occupational safety regulations, a risk assessment, client requirements, or the work site, an appropriate warning system may be necessary or mandatory.

Why is reversing so risky?

With trucks and machinery, direct rear visibility is limited. Mirrors and cameras assist the driver or operator, but people and low obstacles can still unexpectedly be in the path of the vehicle.

The risk is particularly high at locations where vehicles and people work in close proximity, such as:

construction sites;
distribution centers;
warehouses and industrial facilities;
waste and recycling facilities;
municipal depots;
loading and unloading areas;
agricultural operations;
port and transshipment areas;
locations in residential areas.

The backup alarm is primarily intended for people outside the vehicle. It warns that a vehicle is moving backward, so bystanders can leave the danger zone in time.

Is a backup alarm required by law?

For standard vehicles, there is no general Dutch vehicle regulation requiring every vehicle to be equipped with a backup alarm. However, this does not mean that an employer can decide, without further assessment, that such a warning system is unnecessary.

The Working Conditions Decree sets requirements for mobile work equipment whose movement may pose a hazard to employees. For example, such equipment must be equipped with effective devices to ensure adequate visibility if the driver’s direct field of vision is insufficient. There must also be reliable devices available for signaling. In addition, employers must take measures to prevent employees from entering the work zone of moving work equipment. Source: Working Conditions Decree, Articles 7.17b and 7.17c.

Whether a backup alarm is required therefore depends, among other things, on:

the risk assessment and evaluation;
the type of vehicle or machine;
the driver’s direct and indirect visibility;
the nature of the work;
the presence of employees and bystanders;
the layout of the work site;
the measures specified in an industry-specific occupational safety and health catalog;
regulations issued by a client or site manager.

In practice, a backup alarm may therefore indeed be necessary to comply with the duty of care and safety requirements, even if the alarm is not specifically mentioned in vehicle regulations for every individual vehicle.

Clients may impose additional requirements

Additional safety regulations often apply at construction sites, industrial parks, and distribution centers. For example, a client may require that all vehicles reversing be equipped with:

an audible reverse alarm;
a camera or 360° camera system;
person or object detection;
a rotating or flashing light;
a spotter during special maneuvers;
automatic braking intervention.

Therefore, before deploying a vehicle, check not only general legislation but also the RI&E, occupational safety catalog, bidding requirements, and local work regulations.

Why Install a Reverse Alarm After All?

A backup alarm is a relatively simple safety feature with an immediately recognizable function. The signal is automatically activated as soon as reverse gear is engaged.

The main advantages are:

bystanders are immediately warned;
the signal draws attention to a moving vehicle;
it helps prevent collisions and damage;
it improves safety on construction sites and business premises;
the system operates without any additional action required from the driver;
the investment is minimal compared to the potential costs of accidents and damage.

A backup alarm does not solve the driver’s visibility problem. Mirrors, cameras, detection systems, and safe work procedures remain necessary for that purpose.

What types of backup alarms are available?

Traditional beeping alarm

The traditional backup alarm produces the familiar repeating beep. This sound carries relatively far and is immediately recognizable to most people.

This model may be suitable for:

open industrial sites;
locations with a lot of ambient noise;
applications where a wide-area warning is desired;
vehicles used during the day.

One drawback is that the beep can bounce off buildings and other objects. This can sometimes make it difficult to determine the direction from which the vehicle is approaching. Furthermore, the sound may be audible from a greater distance and cause a nuisance.

White-noise alarm

A white-noise alarm produces a broadband, crackling sound. The signal is more directional and therefore easier to locate. People can more quickly determine from which direction the danger is approaching.

The sound is more confined to the area behind the vehicle and diminishes more quickly outside that zone. As a result, it generally causes less disturbance to nearby residents and employees who are not in the danger zone.

White noise is particularly suitable for:

work in residential areas;
early-morning waste collection;
nighttime operations;
distribution centers;
warehouses and industrial facilities;
locations where multiple vehicles are operating simultaneously.

Self-Adjusting Reverse Alarm

A self-adjusting or smart backup alarm measures ambient noise and adjusts the warning volume accordingly. In a busy and noisy area, the alarm sounds louder, while in a quiet environment it produces less noise.

This ensures the signal remains audible without always operating at maximum volume. This supports both safety and the reduction of noise pollution.

Self-adjusting models are available with a traditional beep or white noise.

Voice Alert

For specific vehicles, a voice warning can be used, for example: “Caution, this vehicle is backing up.” A voice message can be clear, but it isn’t the best choice in every environment.

Language, intelligibility, ambient noise, and repetition all play a role here. Rietveld therefore assesses which signal is most effective for each specific application.

What volume is needed?

An alarm must be audible above ambient noise, but should not be unnecessarily loud. A signal that is too soft fails to serve its purpose. Conversely, a continuously very loud alarm can lead to noise pollution or habituation.

When making this choice, the following must be taken into account:

the average ambient noise level;
peak noise levels from machinery;
indoor or outdoor use;
distance from residential areas;
daytime or nighttime operation;
the number of vehicles at the location;
the direction in which the warning signal is needed.

A smart or self-adjusting alarm is particularly valuable when noise levels fluctuate significantly throughout the day.

For which vehicles is an alarm suitable?

Reverse alarms can be installed on a wide range of vehicles and machinery:

trucks and box trucks;
dump trucks and concrete mixers;
garbage trucks and street sweepers;
vans;
forklifts and reach trucks;
wheel loaders and shovels;
excavators;
agricultural machinery;
cranes and telehandlers;
internal transport equipment.

The product must be compatible with the vehicle’s voltage, mounting position, noise requirements, and the conditions in which the vehicle is used. For heavy-duty equipment, dust, water, shock, and vibration resistance are also important.

An alarm is not a complete safety solution

A backup alarm warns people outside the vehicle, but does not tell the driver whether anyone is actually behind the vehicle. Furthermore, the system does not prevent a vehicle from continuing to move when there is a risk of collision.

A comprehensive approach can consist of multiple layers:

Rearview camera

A camera provides the driver with a real-time view of the area behind the vehicle. Good work lighting enhances the camera image in the dark.

360° bird’s-eye view

Multiple cameras are combined into a single top-down view. This gives the driver a better overview of the vehicle’s immediate surroundings.

AI detection

AI cameras can recognize people and certain objects within predefined zones. The driver receives a targeted warning only when a relevant risk arises.

Automatic Braking Intervention

For vehicles and machinery with a high risk of collisions, a system like EasyBrake can automatically apply the brakes if the driver does not react in time.

Safe Work Organization

Technology must be combined with clear driving routes, separate pedestrian routes, speed limits, instructions, and supervision. The Arboportaal emphasizes that mobile work equipment must be operated by employees with the necessary expertise.

Which backup alarm is right for your application?

The right choice depends on both the vehicle and the environment:

Choose a traditional alarm when a widely recognizable signal is needed.

2G Is Ending: Get Your Fleet Ready for 4G in Time | Rietveld

2G doesn't work everywhere yet, but waiting isn't a wise choice

Check now which units in your fleet still rely on 2G

The phase-out of the Dutch 2G network is proceeding differently than expected a few years ago. 2G has not yet been shut down by every provider, and some of the previously announced end dates have been pushed back. This may give the impression that replacing old fleet management units isn’t necessary for the time being.

But that’s a risky conclusion.

Odido has already shut down 2G. KPN will discontinue the old 2G network as of December 1, 2027. Vodafone still offers 2G in the Netherlands, but is explicitly focusing on modern technologies such as 4G, LTE-M, and NB-IoT for new Internet of Things applications.

For organizations with vehicles, machines, or objects that still rely on a 2G unit, the message is therefore clear: take inventory of your equipment now and plan the transition to 4G before the connection is lost.

Current status: July 2026.

Why is 2G being phased out?

2G was introduced in the 1990s and served as the foundation for mobile communication for a long time. It wasn’t just phones that used this network; many business applications were also equipped with a 2G modem.

Examples include:

fleet management units;
GPS trackers;
on-board computers;
alarm systems;
vehicle tracking systems;
remote tachograph solutions;
track-and-trace equipment;
payment terminals;
other Machine-to-Machine and IoT devices.

Mobile spectrum is limited. Providers increasingly want to use the available capacity for faster, more stable, and more energy-efficient networks such as 4G and 5G. In addition, technologies such as LTE-M and NB-IoT are available for specific IoT applications.

Maintaining older networks consumes capacity, energy, and requires maintenance. The phase-out of 2G is therefore irreversible, even though the timeline and approach vary by provider.

What is the current situation for each provider?

Dutch network providers do not follow the same schedule. This explains why some 2G devices still work normally, while others have already lost their connection.

Odido: 2G has been shut down since June 1, 2023

Odido completely shut down its 2G network on June 1, 2023. Devices that can communicate exclusively via 2G no longer work directly on Odido’s mobile network.

Odido advises businesses to replace 2G M2M devices with hardware that is compatible with at least 4G. Depending on the application, LTE-M and NB-IoT may also be suitable alternatives.

KPN: The 2G network will be shut down as of December 1, 2027

KPN has postponed the previously planned shutdown of 2G. According to the latest information from KPN, the legacy 2G network will be shut down as of December 1, 2027.

This gives organizations more time, but it does not change the need to make the transition. The extra time is primarily intended to give users of older equipment the opportunity to replace their systems in a controlled manner.

Waiting until the final months of 2027 increases the risk of capacity issues among suppliers and installation partners.

Vodafone: 2G is still available, but modern IoT networks are the future

Vodafone still operates a 2G network in the Netherlands and has not published a specific end date on its current public Dutch network page.

For business IoT applications, Vodafone is now explicitly focusing on LTE-M and NB-IoT. LTE-M is cited, among other things, as a suitable technology for the automotive industry, Track & Trace, transportation, and logistics.

The fact that 2G is still available today does not mean that devices that communicate exclusively via 2G are future-proof. For new investments and replacements, 4G is the logical choice at a minimum.

Why can a 2G unit still function?

Which network a device uses does not depend solely on the brand name on the SIM card. Business and international IoT SIM cards can utilize multiple mobile networks and roaming partners.

As a result, an older unit can still connect via another available 2G network, even if the original provider has already shut down its own 2G network.

This makes the situation less straightforward. The fact that a vehicle is still transmitting data today only proves that a suitable 2G connection is currently available somewhere. It offers no guarantee for the future.

When conducting the inventory, you should therefore consider not only the provider, but also:

the make and model of the unit;
the built-in modem;
the supported network technology;
the SIM card used;
national and international roaming capabilities;
countries in which vehicles operate;
the applications that depend on the connection.

What are the consequences of the phase-out of 2G?

A fleet management unit collects and transmits data from the vehicle to the online software. If the unit has only a 2G modem and can no longer find a compatible network, this communication will stop.

Depending on your setup, this may result in the loss of features such as:

real-time vehicle locations;
Track & Trace;
automatic trip logging;
odometer readings;
vehicle and CAN bus data;
communication with drivers;
automatic recording of hours and activities;
remote download of tachograph and driver card data;
data integration with scheduling, administration, and TMS;
reports for tax or business purposes;
alarm notifications and asset tracking.

The tachograph itself continues to function, but automatic remote reading and transmission may stop if these processes depend on the 2G unit.

The risk, therefore, isn’t just the loss of a dot on the map. A lost connection can affect multiple administrative and operational processes at once.

A new SIM card does not make a 2G unit compatible with 4G

A common misconception is that only the SIM card needs to be replaced. However, the network technology is also determined by the modem in the unit.

A unit with a modem that supports only 2G cannot communicate via 4G—not even if you insert a modern 4G or IoT SIM card into it.

In that case, the hardware must be replaced. This involves assessing:

what functions the current unit performs;
which connections are available;
whether vehicle data is read via CAN bus;
what peripheral devices are connected;
what software and reports are used;
whether existing integrations need to be retained;
which type of 4G unit is the best fit.

This will help you prevent valuable functionalities or data flows from being lost during the migration.

Which Rietveld units require special attention?

Since 2022, Rietveld has been supplying only new units with 4G connectivity. Units delivered prior to that date may still have a 2G modem.

That does not mean every older unit must automatically be replaced. It does, however, mean that a check is necessary.

You can determine which network technology the hardware supports using the unit, serial, or IMEI number. Rietveld can then work with you to determine:

which units are already 4G-compatible;
which units still communicate exclusively via 2G;
which vehicles need attention first;
how best to plan the replacement;
which existing functions and integrations will be retained.

Why switch now when 2G still works?

As long as data is still coming in, postponing the switch seems appealing. Yet now is actually the best time to organize the migration in a controlled manner.

Avoid a sudden interruption

A timely replacement prevents tracking, trip logging, tachograph downloads, or other processes from stopping unexpectedly.

Schedule the installation around your operations

Units must be physically removed from vehicles and replaced. By planning early, this can be coordinated with maintenance, downtime, or quiet periods.

Avoid a rush right before the end date

As a decommissioning date approaches, demand for hardware and technicians increases. Starting early gives you more flexibility in planning.

Check the entire fleet

Fleets often consist of vehicles of varying ages. Some units are already 4G-ready, while others still operate on 2G. An inventory check prevents unnecessary replacements and unexpected outages.

Make your connection more future-proof

4G offers greater capacity, faster data transfer, and better support for modern fleet management applications. Think of more comprehensive vehicle data, software integrations, and video telematics.

A practical approach for your fleet

A careful transition from 2G to 4G consists of five steps:

Inventory all connected devices

Blind Spots in Urban Areas: Better Visibility with Modern 360° Cameras

A cyclist riding to the right of a truck. A pedestrian crossing right in front of a van. Or a child emerging from behind a parked car. In urban areas, various traffic flows constantly converge. As a result, drivers of large vehicles cannot always have a complete view of their surroundings.

Mirrors remain indispensable, but they do not show every area around a vehicle. Modern 360° camera systems provide a better view of these areas and can also actively warn the driver when a cyclist, pedestrian, or other vehicle gets too close.

Where do blind spots occur?

A blind spot is an area around a vehicle that the driver cannot see directly or via the mirrors. With trucks, vans, and construction vehicles, multiple high-risk areas can occur:

directly in front of the vehicle, below the driver’s field of view from the cab;
to the front right, partly due to the A-pillar and the height of the cab;
along the right side of the vehicle;
diagonally behind the vehicle;
directly behind the vehicle;
in the case of truck-trailer combinations, where the viewing angle changes when turning.

Cyclists and pedestrians can briefly disappear from view, especially when turning right, pulling away, backing up, and maneuvering. According to the European Commission, blind spots in heavy vehicles play a particularly significant role in accidents involving cyclists, pedestrians, and motorcyclists during turning maneuvers.

Why is the risk greater in built-up areas?

In built-up areas, a driver must process a lot of information in a short amount of time. Consider:

cyclists passing a vehicle on the left and right;
pedestrians at crosswalks;
busy intersections and roundabouts;
narrow streets with parked vehicles;
loading and unloading activities;
traffic lights, traffic signs, and temporary road closures;
e-bikes and electric vehicles that approach quickly or almost silently.

In addition, a road user can move out of the field of view of one mirror and into the blind spot of another. Even an experienced driver can temporarily lose sight of someone as a result.

The consequences of a collision are significant—not only for the victim and the driver, but also for the organization. Consider property damage, downtime, investigations, administrative processing, and potential reputational damage. Investing in good visibility is therefore both a safety measure and a business decision.

Mirrors alone are not always sufficient

Since 2007, additional blind-spot mirrors have been mandatory on new trucks in the European Union. Older trucks have been required to be retrofitted since 2009. However, the European Commission also notes that conventional mirrors do not always make all people and vehicles next to a truck visible.

In addition, a driver must switch between different mirrors and lines of sight while maneuvering. The more separate sources of information there are, the harder it becomes to assess at a glance whether the area is clear.

A good camera system combines multiple fields of view onto a single monitor. This allows for a quicker, comprehensive view of the situation around the vehicle.

How does a 360° bird’s-eye view system work?

A 360° system such as OmniVue 360° uses four strategically placed cameras. An electronic control unit combines the camera images into a single, clear bird’s-eye view.

The driver sees the vehicle, as it were, from above, including its immediate surroundings. In addition to this bird’s-eye view, the monitor can display a separate camera image. When the turn signal or reverse gear is engaged, the relevant image can be displayed automatically.

This provides assistance with:

turning right and left;
maneuvering in narrow streets;
reversing;
parking;
loading and unloading;
working around construction equipment and special vehicles.

A 360° camera does not replace the driver’s mirrors or visual checks. The system adds an additional source of information that significantly improves visibility in areas that are otherwise difficult to see.

What makes a modern 360° camera system better?

Not every camera system offers the same level of support. Quality is determined not only by the number of cameras, but primarily by how the system is configured, installed, and calibrated.

A clear and coherent view

Cameras must provide sufficient resolution to clearly identify people and objects. Furthermore, the images from the individual cameras must align properly with one another. Poor calibration can cause distortions or unclear transitions, particularly in areas where a clear view is essential.

Adjustment to the vehicle

A delivery van has different dimensions and risk areas than a tractor-trailer, garbage truck, street sweeper, or mobile crane. The position of the cameras and the configured detection zones must therefore be tailored to the specific vehicle and the tasks at hand.

Automatic Image Switching

The driver should not have to manually select a camera view during every maneuver. A good system automatically displays the relevant view as soon as the turn signal or reverse gear is engaged.

Good performance under various conditions

Cameras must also remain functional in rain, twilight, and poorly lit locations. In addition, the lenses must be securely mounted and easy to inspect and clean.

Targeted alerts

Too many alerts cause irritation and can lead to a driver becoming less responsive to warnings. Detection zones and alerts must therefore be configured so that the system primarily issues warnings when an actual risk arises.

AI cameras recognize vulnerable road users

A traditional camera system displays images, but the driver must interpret them independently. Modern AI cameras go a step further. They can distinguish between, for example:

pedestrians;
cyclists;
people on e-bikes;
passenger cars;
trucks and buses.

When someone enters a preset detection zone, the driver receives a visual or audible warning. This not only provides additional visibility but also actively draws attention to a potential hazard.

New European safety requirements: an important step

The European General Safety Regulation has further tightened the requirements for new vehicles. Depending on the vehicle category and date of registration, new trucks and buses must be equipped with additional systems that detect vulnerable road users when moving off and turning. The legal basis for this is set forth in Regulation (EU) 2019/2144.

This development helps make new vehicles safer, but it does not immediately solve every problem. Many existing vehicles will remain in service for years to come. Additionally, manufacturer-provided solutions may vary by make and model.

Furthermore, meeting a minimum requirement does not automatically mean that the driver has optimal visibility in every work situation. An additional camera system can provide a wider field of view and be tailored to the vehicle, its configuration, and its daily use.

Using Camera Footage for Evaluation and Improvement

A camera system can be expanded with recording and video telematics functions. Through EasyTrack, camera footage configured for this purpose can be accessed remotely, depending on the selected configuration and authorizations.

This helps, for example, with:

reconstructing an incident;
assessing an insurance claim;
identifying recurring high-risk situations;
improving driving and maneuvering instructions;

When using camera footage, always clearly document the purpose for which the footage is collected, who has access to it, and how long the data will be retained. This way, you combine traffic safety with careful data management.

Technology only works as part of a comprehensive safety approach

A 360° or AI camera system is no substitute for safe driving behavior. The best results are achieved when technology is combined with clear operational guidelines.

Consider, for example:

approaching intersections and roundabouts at a moderate speed;
signaling your turn in a timely manner;
using mirrors and cameras according to a set viewing routine;
checking lenses and monitors daily;
having detection zones inspected periodically;
train drivers on the operation and limitations of the system;
agree on safe loading, unloading, and maneuvering procedures.

The driver remains responsible for the maneuver. The technology ensures that he or she has the right information sooner.

Which camera solution is right for your fleet?

The right solution depends on the vehicle and the environment in which it is used. A distribution truck in a city center requires a different configuration than a delivery van, garbage truck, or construction vehicle.

Progressive Safe System: Travel Safely and in Compliance with Your Truck Through London

Do you drive a truck through London? If so, you’ll need to comply with the Direct Vision Standard and the HGV Safety Permit Scheme. These regulations are designed to better protect vulnerable road users, such as cyclists and pedestrians, from the risk of collisions involving heavy vehicles.

For trucks with limited direct visibility, the Progressive Safe System is required to apply for a valid safety permit. Rietveld provides a complete Camos solution for this purpose, featuring cameras, intelligent detection, and alerts.

This helps the driver recognize dangerous situations sooner and ensures the vehicle demonstrably meets the applicable safety requirements.

What is the Direct Vision Standard?

The Direct Vision Standard, or DVS for short, assesses how much a truck driver can see directly through the cab windows. This refers to direct visibility, without the use of mirrors or cameras.

Based on the vehicle’s design and the height of the cab, the manufacturer assigns the truck a rating of zero to five stars:

0 stars: very limited direct visibility;
1 or 2 stars: limited direct visibility;
3 to 5 stars: better direct visibility from the cab.

The star rating is tied to the vehicle’s design and cannot be increased by retrofitting cameras or sensors. However, additional safety systems may allow a vehicle with a low rating to still qualify for an HGV Safety Permit.

Which trucks are subject to DVS London?

All trucks with a gross vehicle weight exceeding 12 metric tons must have a valid HGV Safety Permit to drive in most of Greater London.

This also applies to:

Dutch and other foreign trucks;
vehicles that enter London only occasionally;
tractor-trailer combinations;
box trucks;
concrete mixers and construction vehicles;
vehicles that load or unload goods in London.

The regulation applies 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Even for a single trip to London, the vehicle must have a valid permit. The permit itself can be requested free of charge from Transport for London. View the current DVS rules on the Transport for London website.

What is the Progressive Safe System?

The Progressive Safe System, also known as PSS or DVS2, is the stricter successor to the original Safe System from 2019. The old permits for trucks with zero, one, or two stars expired on October 27, 2024.

To obtain a new permit for these vehicles, they must now meet the requirements of the Progressive Safe System. PSS goes beyond just camera footage. The system must actively assist the driver in detecting cyclists and pedestrians alongside and in front of the vehicle.

Key components include:

view of the critical zone next to the vehicle;
detection of vulnerable road users on the side;
detection in front of the vehicle when pulling away;
targeted warnings inside the cab;
an audible warning for road users outside the vehicle;
visual blind-spot indicators on the vehicle;
appropriate underrun protection where required.

Which components still need to be added depends on the vehicle and the safety systems already in place.

Why was it necessary to enhance the system?

A traditional camera system provides the driver with additional visibility, but still requires him or her to look at the monitor at the right moment. In a busy urban environment, a driver must simultaneously pay attention to traffic lights, lanes, mirrors, cameras, cyclists, and pedestrians.

The Progressive Safe System therefore adds active detection. The system helps determine whether a vulnerable road user is actually present in a risk area and provides the driver with a targeted warning.

This support is particularly valuable when:

turning right or left;
pulling away from a stop;
accelerating at a traffic light;
maneuvering on narrow streets;
passing bike lanes;
loading and unloading in urban areas;
driving in heavy traffic with many cyclists and pedestrians.

The technology does not replace the driver’s visual awareness. It is an additional layer of safety that directs attention to the right place at a critical moment.

The Camos Progressive Safe System Kit

Rietveld supplies a vehicle-specific Progressive Safe System kit from Camos. This solution combines camera footage, intelligent detection, and alerts for the driver and vulnerable road users.

An important component of the kit is the SmartVue DobliCam. This intelligent camera combines visibility and detection in a single unit. The camera monitors critical areas around the vehicle and recognizes road users who are within a preset danger zone.

Depending on the vehicle configuration, the solution consists of:

camera and monitor views of the blind spot;
Blind Spot Information System for detection alongside the vehicle;
Moving Off Information System for detection in front of the vehicle;

audible warnings in the cab;
Audible warning on the outside when turning;
Blind spot warning markings;
vehicle-specific wiring and mounting components;
conformity and installation documentation.

The exact configuration must always be tailored to the vehicle and the factory-installed systems already in place.

Blind Spot Information System

The Blind Spot Information System, or BSIS, monitors the critical zone on the side of the truck. Cyclists and pedestrians may be present there without the driver being able to see them directly from the cab.

The system alerts the driver when a vulnerable road user is in the detection zone. If the vehicle begins a turning maneuver and a collision risk arises, the warning becomes more prominent.

By distinguishing between mere presence and actual risk, the driver receives a targeted warning. This helps limit unnecessary alerts and warning overload.

Moving Off Information System

When the vehicle is stationary, a pedestrian or cyclist may be positioned directly in front of the cab. Due to the height and shape of the truck, this person is not always directly visible.

The Moving Off Information System, or MOIS for short, therefore monitors the area in front of the vehicle. The system informs and warns the driver when someone is in this critical zone just as the truck is about to pull away.

This assistance is particularly important at traffic lights, crosswalks, loading areas, and busy city streets.

Not every detection needs to trigger an immediate alarm

A safety system must warn when necessary, without constantly burdening the driver with irrelevant notifications. Too many warnings can be distracting and lead to signals being taken less seriously.

That’s why the detection zones and warnings are tailored to:

the length and width of the vehicle;
the position of the cab;
the body or superstructure;
the turning radius;
the location of the cameras;
everyday traffic conditions;
left- or right-hand drive configuration.

For Dutch trucks with the steering wheel on the left, cameras, detection systems, and warning devices must be installed around the risk areas relevant to London. Transport for London explicitly states that left-hand-drive foreign trucks must also comply with the DVS requirements.

Does this requirement also apply to existing factory-installed systems?

Newer trucks may already be equipped with cameras and detection systems from the factory. In some cases, these features meet the required safety functions.

Transport for London states that additional camera systems may not be necessary if the vehicle already has equivalent systems that meet relevant UNECE requirements, including BSIS and MOIS.

This does not automatically mean that every modern truck fully meets all PSS requirements. Some components may still be missing, such as:

an external turn signal;
the correct warning markings;
additional camera coverage;
vehicle-specific documentation;
proof of the permit application.

Therefore, have a preliminary check conducted to determine what is already in place and what adjustments are still needed. This will help you avoid duplicate systems, redundant warnings, and unnecessary investments.

Installation and documentation are part of compliance

Simply purchasing the right products is not enough. The cameras and detection systems must be mounted in the correct position, set up correctly, and tailored to the vehicle’s dimensions.

Furthermore, when applying for an HGV Safety Permit, you must be able to demonstrate that the necessary measures are in place.

What are the consequences of driving into London without a permit?

Transport for London monitors vehicles using automatic license plate recognition. A truck driving in the DVS zone without a valid HGV Safety Permit may be fined.

The fine for the vehicle owner or operator can be as high as £550. If paid on time, this amount is usually reduced. In addition, a missing permit can lead to delays, downtime, and disruptions to your schedule.

Therefore, before every trip, check:

whether the vehicle is subject to the DVS requirement;
what the vehicle’s star rating is;
whether the permit is still valid;
whether the vehicle meets the corresponding PSS requirements;
whether any changes to the vehicle or license plate have been reported.

Safer Even Outside London
